Aprilia RSV4 Factory – mid-2011 – Rs. 12 lakh*

TVS showcased the Apache 180 RTR ABS at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2010. Bike enthusiasts were eager to ride home the ABS version of the Apache but however, TVS had remained quiet in 2010. But now, we can expect the safer Apache to surface on the showrooms soon.

The ABS feature in the upcoming Apache 180 ABS will have a sophisticated hydraulic ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and speed sensors. ABS prevents the wheels from locking during hard braking ensuring the rider’s safety.

The TVS Apache 180 RTR ABS will more likely come with another important safety feature termed as ‘Rear Wheel lift-off Protection’ (RLP). RLP senses the rear wheel lifting off the ground and immediately releases the front brake pressure for a fraction and thereby keeps the rear wheel grounded at all times.

The Apache 180 RTR will likely be powered by the same 177.4 cc engine that produces 17.03 PS of maximum power and 15.5 Nm of maximum torque. Sources say that TVS will charge an additional Rs. 8,000 for the ABS version of Apache RTR 180. Hence, the bike could be priced at around Rs. 80,000.

TVS ROCKZ

The TVS Rockz is a 125 cc motorcycle, currently sold by the company in Indonesia. Reports indicate that the bike is enjoying decent success in that country. Even in February 2010, a few test mules of the same Rockz have been caught in Hosur, Tamil Nadu where TVS has its factory.

Based on the specifications provided in the TVS Indonesia website, the Rockz is powered by a 4 stroke SOHC 124.5 cc engine that generates 9.8 bhp @ 7500 rpm of peak power and 9.8 Nm @ 5500 rpm of peak torque. We think that with those specs, the bike should have a top speed of well above 100 kmph.

Mileage would be similar to other 125 cc motorcycles – around 60 kmpl. The engine is mated to a rotary gear box with N-1-2-3-4-N pattern (Remember Hero Honda Street?) Sources say that TVS Rockz has an Integrated Music System (IMS) and Anti Theft Lock (ATL), both of which, if introduced in India, would be the first of its kind in Indian motorcycles.

If the company launches the Rockz, it would create (or maybe recreate) a new segment in India. The market is a bit more adventurous now, so there is a chance that TVS could actually go ahead and launch the Rockz step-through bike. TVS sells Rockz in Indonesia at a premium price of Rs.64, 153. We hope the India-bound Rockz would be similarly priced in th Rs.60,000 – Rs. 67,000 price bracket.
