Ruskin Bond's cameo in '7 Khoon Maaf'

Ruskin Bond, the grand old "sahib" from Landour in Mussourie, has been bitten by the tinsel bug. The novelist will make his maiden foray on the big screen with a cameo in Vishal Bhardwaj's forthcoming Saat Khoon Maaf, based on his short story Susannah's Seven Husbands.

"I am in the movie. I have told Vishal that I have got a movie part. Don't you dare cut me out," Bond said at the ongoing DSC Jaipur Literature Festival.

This is not Bond's first movie with filmmaker Bhardwaj. "I had earlier collaborated with him in the Blue Umbrella which was also based on my story. The story was recommended to Vishal by his wife. I could not work with Bhardwaj on that movie," the 76-year-old author said.

Ruskin Bond's cameo in '7 Khoon Maaf'

Bond has been actively involved in scripting Saat Khoon Maaf, which stars Priyanka Chopra, unlike a previous screen adaptation of his short story The Flight of Pigeons in Junoon, where he "did not even meet the director".

"Susannah… was originally a short story comprising a few odd pages. When Vishal decided to turn it into a movie, I expanded the story into an 80-page novella and then began to think in terms of scenes. It became an actual script - a 200-page full-length Hindi script," Bond said.

Bond appears in the movie with Priyanka Chopra, who kills "each of her seven husbands".

"I had to devise regional (Indian) ways of killing the husbands," Bond said.

The author believes that movies do justice to literature.

"I was a great movie-goer as a boy. I had watched some great movies adapted from Charles Dickens' classics like David Copperfield, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and Christmas Carol. His classics lend themselves to brilliant visual adaptations on screen. Stories by writers like Somerset Maugham and Daphne du Maurier were also made into movies," Bond said.

"My own writing has been influenced by the fact that I went to see the movies and I always thought in terms of visuals," he said.

Bond said his "fondness for short story as a preferred writing format dates back to his early youth". "One of the reasons why I like writing stories is because when I started writing I had to make a living out of it. Novels could take up to a year," he said.

Bond said the sense of perpetual wonder that marked his stories was because he didn't grow up.

The novelist, who believes in the importance of the oral tradition of story-telling feels that laptops have changed the way children look at stories. "They read great stories on the internet. Fantasy has a great appeal today and technology has made inroads into stories," he said.

According to Bond, whose books are also steeped in fantasy, "the Harry Potter novels had been brilliantly executed and highly successful".

"Potter has proved children's books can outsell adult books and become bestsellers," he said.

Born in 1934, the iconic writer of British origin was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1999 for his contribution to children's literature. He is famous for novellas and short stories like the Room on the Roof, Night Train at Deoli, Time Stops at Shamli, Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra, and Flight of the Pigeons.

But what is the master storyteller's favourite story? Pat comes his reply, "Often at night, I am restless and my blanket slips off. An unseen benign hand puts the blanket back on me. It is a very motherly ghost."

This is a ghost story that Ruskin Bond has never got around to writing. It is his friendly guardian spirit.

BIOS Acer 4738 drivers update

My notebook (Acer Aspire 4710) have problems with shutdown and restart ... when I uninstall Crystal Eye driver from device manager, shutdown problem solved.. my Acer notebook can shutdown smoothly ... but my notebook still have restart problem...

When I open eSettings Management from Empowering Technology, I see that my BIOS version is v1.02 ....

then I goto Acer website and I see BIOS update avalaible for my Aspire 4710...

click OK to continue...

WFlash will automatically update the BIOS ... wait until it finish and computer will restart.

I wanted to make my own WordPress site! It has been my plan and finally it has become a reality. So what did I do?
First, I bought a domain. There are a lot of sites where you can buy a domain but I bought mine at HostingDude. Since my friend bought there too. So I just wanted to be sure that there is no problem.
Second, I signed up at Byteact for a free hosting account. You see this is how it works to be able to make a website you need a domain and a hosting account so that you would be able to upload all the files that you need. I will explain it further later on.
So once you have the free hosting account and your domain you can go to Byteact. Click on add-on domains. There would be a text box where you can type your domain. So go ahead and type in your registered domain. At this page you will see the name servers take note of them. You go and log in to your hosting account or to your domain account.
I will just go over hosting account that I use since it was my experience. Go to Domain Manager and you will see your site. Put a check mark on it and click on the name server. Then you can input the name servers that I told you to take note of on the two text boxes.
Now you have successfully connected your hosting account and your website. It is time to download WordPress. You go to WordPress.org/download/ and download the WordPress installer. Once you have downloaded it you need to upload it on your hosting account. So you go to Byteact online FTP then click on the folder with your domain's name then click on htdocs folder, inside the htdocs folder you can upload and unzip the WordPress installer file.
We are almost done. The next thing that you need to do is to find wp-config-sample.php and rename it to wp-config.php. Open the file and click on edit, you will need the database name, database username, database password and database host.
Create a Database on Database Management then My SQL Databases. You can Create a name for your database and that is what you will put in the database name. The data base username is called My SQL username which you will find on the lower left corner of your screen. The database password is the same as your FTP Password. Lastly the database host is the My SQL hostname at the lower left corner of your CPanel. Now that you have successfully edited them you can now save it. Then on your browser type in "yourdomain.com/wp-admin/install.php" or "yourdomain.com/whereyourwordpressfilesarelocated/wp-admin/install.php. After that, you can successfully log in to your WordPress site. Congratulations!

CML: Mortgage lending dips in December

The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has today reported mortgage lending remained weak in December.
However, the month is traditionally a quiet one as prospective buyers opt to wait until the New Year to purchase a home.
The number of loans approved for those buying a new home stood at 39,000 during the month – a 4% fall compared with November but a 37% drop when compared with December 2009.
However, the CML points out that buyers were rushing to beat the end of the stamp duty holiday at the end of 2009.
On an annual basis, mortgage lending rose slightly in 2010 with 529,300 new loans granted to house buyers – a rise of 3% compared with 2009.
However, mortgage lending remains at “historically low levels”, according to the Council.
Although, the CML highlights that mortgage lending stabilised in 2010 after “very sharp” falls in 2008 and 2009.
First-time buyers continue to struggle to get a foot on the property ladder as a result of the ongoing mortgage rationing.
Without a hefty deposit, this group of people are unable to secure a mortgage.
